Clapton wires are constructed from multiple strands of wire, two ore more strands. The outer "Clapton" wrap makes the wire look like a guitar-string, hence the name "Clapton", after the guitar player, Eric Clapton. The extra valleys and peaks created by this fine wire wrap allows for faster liquid travel along the length of the wire, along with the creation of greater surface area for more vapour and flavour production.

Single-core Clapton wires feature a single core wire to carry the current, and a single fine wire wrapping the outside.

2-Core Clapton wires feature two core wires fused together in parallel alignment to carry the current, and a single fine wire wrapping the outside to hold the cores together. When doing your Wire Calculations, this type of wire is calculated as a "dual coil".

3-Core Clapton wires feature three core wires fused together in parallel alignment to carry the current, and a single fine wire wrapping the outside to hold the cores together. When doing your Wire Calculations, this type of wire is calculated as a "triple coil".

4-Core Clapton wires feature four core wires fused together in parallel alignment to carry the current, and a single fine wire wrapping the outside to hold the cores together. When doing your Wire Calculations, this type of wire is calculated as a "quad coil".

For wire calculation purposes, only consider the material and gauge of the core wires, as they will be carrying the current through the load. The outer Clapton wire wrap does not factor in to calculations. For example, if you are using a 2-Core Fused Clapton that is 26 N80 / 36 Ka1, you will only count the larger 26 gauge N80 cores as "two coils" for the purposes of your calculations.
